FOCUS Curriculum
WHAT IS THE GIFTED CURRICULUM?
The Gifted Education Department of Gwinnett County Public Schools provides a comprehensive curriculum consisting of several different units of study for every grade level. Details about each unit can be found under the corresponding grade level tab.
HOW MANY UNITS ARE TAUGHT EACH YEAR?
It is important to note that there are many more units than can possibly be taught in one school year. It is up to the teacher's discretion to select units, and it is reasonable to expect 5-7 different units to be covered each year. These units of study can be expanded upon with various enrichment activities.
WHAT ELSE DO FOCUS STUDENTS LEARN?
All grade levels work each week on an assortment of critical thinking, problem solving, and logical reasoning puzzles and activities. These vary from week to week, but frequently include logic puzzles and analogies.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS & OBJECTIVES OF THE GWINNETT COUNTY GIFTED PROGRAM?
Through the context of Gwinnett County Public Schools' AKS and AKS Extensions, the gifted education program will focus on the following areas, as appropriate for each student:
-Creative Expression
-Thinking Skills
-Self-Awareness in order to learn to cope with weaknesses and to explore and appreciate strengths
-Communication with peers of similar ability and interests
-Decision-making
-Acceptance of challenges, stipulations, and competitions with others and self
-Interest in the fine arts
-Training in various career fields of interest
-A positive attitude towards mankind
-Self-direction
-The ability to cope with, change, and foresee the needs of the future
-Understanding and expression of quality and excellence in one's performance
